The Public Health and Community Nutrition Interest Group (PHCNIG) Community of Practice is a new initiative for dietitians working in PHCN. The aim is to help PHCN dietitians reflect on and understand their own culture, values, beliefs, attitudes, biases, assumptions, privilege and power and their influence on practice. Our vision for the Community of Practice is to create opportunities for attendees to reflect and improve their PHCN practice through facilitated discussions, information sharing and relationship building. In doing so, we hope that connections across the dietetic community are created and opportunities for collaborative work are forged.

Community of Practice sessions will be online with an invited facilitator guiding the discussion to generate reflection on own practice regarding a specific topic, and providing attendees the opportunity to share their experiences with the group. The sessions are designed to be interactive and informal, through guided small group discussion, scenario-based activities, and opportunities for information sharing and collaboration. As such, the sessions will not be recorded and any resources will be shared.

This session is open to all Dietitians Australia members and non-members. We invite non-members to facilitate contribution of skilled and experienced public health dietitians to this learning community who are not Dietitians Australia members, and to highlight the activity of PHCNIG within Dietitians Australia.

This community of practice is suited to dietitians of all levels of experience working in/aspiring to work in PHCN who would like to build connections and share in collaborative practice.

The 2023 Community of Practice sessions will focus on the theme of Inclusivity in PHCN Practice.

March 2023 session: ‘Size-inclusive PHCN practice’
Our first Community of Practice session will be facilitated by Dr Fiona Willer – Director of Health, Not Diets, academic and current DA Board member. In recognising that body weight is not necessarily a reliable indicator of health or nourishment, we will explore how size-inclusive PHCN initiatives emphasize the promotion of healthy behaviours regardless of a person's size or weight; create safe and supportive environments free from weight stigma and discrimination; and address the broader social and environmental factors that can impact a person's or population’s ability to access healthy food options and engage in physical activity. Using scenario-based examples and sharing of practice experiences, we will consider specific practice skills, actions/behaviours that ensure size-inclusivity in our PHCN practice.
